Ancestor rites(제사)
Koreans always have been thinking that they can't exist without ancestors, so we have been appreciating and serving their ancestors from the bottom of our heart. To express our gratitude to ancestors, Koreans do several things like taking care of their graves, holding a memorial service. My grandfather is a eldest son of the eldest son's family, so we usually perform ancestral rites about once or twice a month. so since I was a child, I always have seen and taken part in preparing ancestor rites, and I learned a lot about it. Nowadays, some koreans who have particular religion don't perform ancestor rites, but most koreans still do. We perform ancestor rites on traditional holiday like chuseok or lunar new year's day and anniversary of ancestors' death. Traditional ancestor rites have several rules to keep. We write ancestors name in Chinese character on traditional korean paper, Hanji and paste it to wooden container. then we place prepared foods in regular order using wooden container. We believe that ancestors eat what we prepared for them, so descendants keep quiet not to bother ancestors' eating time. We finish ancestors rites with a deep bow(절). After ancestor rites, koreans share prepared food with family and neighbors and drink makgeolli(막걸리) together. Korea is a nation with a history of five thousand years, so we have a lot of distinct traditions. but I'm so sad that lots of them are not kept these days. Ancestors rites is one of the several traditions that are preserved well, I'm so proud of them and I hope that lots of koreans and my future-descendants would cherish this tradition and follow it, too. |

ReplyDelete1. What I like about this piece of writing is that you tried to explain and describe what the ancestor ritual is. I can draw the exact situation of the ritual.
2. Your main point seems to be Korean traditional rituals for ancestors.
3. 'Korea is a nation with a history of five thousand years, so we have a lot of distinct traditions.' struck me 'cause i am proud of our history and ceremonies, too.
4. '..., so descendants keep quiet not to bother ancestors' eating time.' is not clear to me. I recommend you to change this sentence like
'..., soi descendants keep quiet not to bother ancestors while they are eating.'
5. one change you could make that would make the biggest improvement in this piece of writing is your intorduction. You should have mentioned more about your topic. I think dealing with other rituals is enough by one or two sentences, however, you put these items too much. And it is quite general so I can't guess what you are going to talk about. Additionally, you said you learned a lot by participating some rituals and I think if you want to put this statement, you should have talked what you learned through it, not just mentioning 'a lot'. It's too general and ambiguous.

ReplyDelete1. What I like about this piece of writing is how the writer wrote it really simple that it makes the reader fully understand korea's traditional ways of expressing our gratitude to ancestors. Also, in the conclusion part, I can see how much the writer appreciates this sort of tradition.
2. Your main point is traditional Korean way of showing our gratitude to ancestors.
3. 'Koreans always have been thinking that they can't exist without ancestors, so we have been appreciating and serving their ancestors from the bottom of our heart.' struck me because it reminded me of how Korea compared to other countries have a real interesting and special way of appreciating and serving ancestors.
4. There were many sentences that could have been changed more naturally. However, in general, i could understand what the writer was trying to say.
5. Organization should be done better. Introduction paragraph should start with a hook sentence that intrigues readers to read. Also, there should be a thesis sentence which shows what the writing will be about with not so much of other details. In my opinion, this essay could have been more interesting if it was well organized.
