       A special Korean tradition, Samulnori

It is very common to hear loud percussion instruments sound while touring in Korea. In particular, it is a scene that can be easily viewed on the streets on special occasions such as Chusok, Sul Nal, and festivals. This Korean traditional performance is called, "Samulnori."

"Samulnori" which is also widely known as "Pungmulnori" derives its name from the four objects called "samul," and "nori" which means play. The four instruments consist of a small and large gong, an hourglass-shapped drum, and a big drum. These traditional Korean instruments are called "Pungmul." Normally, there are four energetic people playing in one group. However, nowadays, there are more than five people composed in one large group. This tradition originated from long time ago when hard working farmers performed to celebrate and hope for a good harvest. It is played both indoors and outdoors by powerful sound-making percussions. Many people strongly appreciate this tradition because Samulnori is very amusing and exciting to watch. There are even Samulnori clubs in Korea universities where students participate and play in almost every school festivals and celebrations. The rhythm stirs your soul and makes your piled up stress vanish. It is a performance which imprints a good memorable experience on the people who watch and participate.

Overall, Samulnori truly expresses Korea's spirit and rhythm. It is something that I recommend tourists to experience that represents a special part of Korea's traditional culture.

  1. From Noh Young Sun to Kim Kyung Un Assignment page 51 essay first draft/Korean tradition

    1. What I like about your essay is your choice of words. The words you used are easy to understand, so It was not really hard for me to grasp the meaning of what you are trying to say in this writing.

    2. Your main point seems to be that Samulnori is a tradition that represents the best the so-called Korean sentiments(?)

    3. I like this sentence "The rhythm stirs your soul and makes your piled up stress vanish."because I think you vividly described the sensation you get when watching the Samulnori performance.

    4. I think the expression Korea's spirit is a little bit vague. When you say it to Koreans , we all instinctively understand what it means, but I think foreigners would not understand what you meant by it. I think you should expound on what Korea's spirit is about, althoguh it is going to be a little hard to explain it in English.

5.Overall, it is an interesting essay to read, but I think both introduction and conclusion paragraphs are rather too short and your thesis statement and the hook are a little bit weak. Why don't you beef up both introduction and conclusion paragraphs and throw in more interesting information about Samulnori to catch the readers' attention?

  2. To Kim Kyung Un From Kim Ju Yeon Assignment page 51 essay first draft, Korean Tradition

    1. What I like about this piece of writing is that you made clear definition of each word. Therefore, it was easy to understand what you were trying to say and describe about 'Samulnori'.

    2. Your main point seems to be that 'Samulnori' is a Korean tradition that expresses Korea's spirit and rhythm.

    3. The sentence I like best among all the sentences is "There are even Samulnori clubs in Korea universities where students participate and play in almost every school festivals and celebrations". I think this is a good description you gave to the readers, telling us how current generation have the opportunity to learn Samulnori.

    4. I think the whole essay would be much better if you cleary specify the sentence "Korea's spirit and rhythm". We all know what the word 'spirit' and 'rhythm' literally mean. However, we are unaware of the spirit and rhythm of Korea.

    5. To make the essay more smooth to read, in my opinion, I recommend you to make your conclusion paragraph a little longer. It would look better ir you add more details and descriptions to why you recommend 'Samulnori' to tourists.
