Opinion essay pg104 first draft / 200800759 Ju Yeon Kim

Negative Effets of TV on Children

On TV commercials we can easily see advertisements about TV education programs coming out as a form of DVD. It usually emphasize about how it helps children learn, for example English, and how long the effect last. Then aren't there any side effects of TV effecting children? Does TV only has good sides on developing childern?

There are diverse research and opinions about TV effecting children. Some people argue that it enables children to learn in a more effective way because TV has both audio and video effect. Others however, disagree pointing out several counter arguments based on negative effects of TV on children. I also agree with the opinion that TV gives negative effect on growing children than positive effects. According to AAP(American Acadmy of Pedatrics) young children should have limited time of TV. This is essential for better brain development on young children. TV should be limited on children in order to not get distracted by TV and fail to learn physical and social development. Moreover, TV contains too many risky sources that are harmful to children. TV constantly features programs that contains harmful substances to young children, such as, sex, violence, drugs and alcohol. These are sources that should be guided carefully by adults as they grow up, not through TV. In order to resist children from receiving bad effect through children, a strict guide by adults when they are watching TV is necessary. They should guide children when they spend too many time watching TV and must help them find alternative activities such as sport, art, or learning instruments.

(Mary L. Gavin, MD. 2006 October. How TV Affects Your Children. Retrieved November 7, 2010, from http://kidshealth.org/parent/positive.family/tv_affects_child.html#)

TV has become one of the mechanic that we buy and place it in our house. Most family have at least one TV in their house and usually spend some time watching it. This television should be limited on children as they grow up due to its bad effect. It can harm children's brain development and give information that are harmful without a guidance. Therefore, a family which have young children should put their effort at developing a good habit of watching TV to their children.

"In order to resist children from receiving bad effect through children, a strict guide by adults when they are watching TV is necessary."
It is always abundance which drives something or someone on a bad side, especially children who don't have yet any measure to judge which is proper or too much, or good or not. That is why even though TV has a lot of positive effects on children, they need to be guided by their parents.

    6. Write one or two questions about something that needs clarification or additional support.
