Informative Essay Seonyoung Blair Hwang

The difference between American and Korean restaurants

200903875 Seonyoung Blair Hwang

When I was in America, I went a restaurant with my boyfriend. A staff member welcomed us and my boyfriend said, "Party for two". After that, another smiling member came and led us our seat. While we were going to the seat, she asked us "How are you today?" with a bright smile showing her teeth.

While Korean people consider talking with staff members awkward, it is extremely normal in American restaurants that guests and staff members say hello to each other. And in America, the member who led guests to their seat takes charge of us from delivering food to dealing with their inconvenience, whereas Korean restaurants staff members does not in charge of specific tables. While people are eating, I found the members keep asking to their customers 'Is everything okay?' or 'Do you need more water?' and so on. It seemed like they try to care about their clients as much as they can. After having a meal, when pay for the bill, the sum of money we should pay was more than it was supposed to be paid. It is because all of American restaurants don't include 10% tax on their menu while majority of Korean restaurants do. Furthermore, people should pay 10~15% or so extra money for the worker so called tip. Even though it is not a duty, most of the American people take it for granted.

If got a chance to visit American restaurants, never be awkward that workers consistently ask customers what they need because it is culturally different or do not be surprised that you should pay more amount of money than you expected because they exclude tax and tip on their menu.
