Coming-of-Age Day

200902474 Lee Su Jin

In many countries, there are Coming-of-Age Day. In this day, people congratulate a boy or a girl for becoming an adult. And it shows their customs well. So they are different each other. It is very interesting that compare these and contrast these. Especially, I will see the custom of Korea and that of a Masai.

In Korea, we give rose, perfume and kiss to boy(girl). I think that many koreans think that these things symbolize being adult well. Maybe a rose express a romantic love, perfume shows maturing, and kiss means permission of love. It is just my thought. Anyway people joy freedom in that day. But in Masai, the ceremony of Coming-of-Age Day is more serious than Korea. Men of Masai think that a man become a real adult when he can defeat tiger by himself. So boys of Masai are training for being a real man. Unlike people in Korea, there are many tasks to be a adult.

However like Korea, the Coming-of-Age Day is also important day in Masai. And people of both countries congratulate the day sincerely. I think that only the pattern of way is different, but the root is similar.
