Opinion essay pg104 first draft / 201000269 Kim Kyung Un

Testing in School

The amplified sound of thin papers being flipped and turned, anxious scribble noises made by pencils filling in bubble columns, heart beating faster and faster as time runs out precisely remind me of myself of how I am whenever I take exams. When it comes to taking tests, many students around the world fear the day of examination, which sometimes do have a tremendous impact on their life deciding on the importance of the test, or they can simply mean an overall evaluation of one self. Surprisingly, when most schools use standardized tests, there are schools which say no to tests, and are not convinced that tests in school is the most effective tool for evaluating the students. Different opinions on having standardized test in schools still exist, mostly between contrasting ideas, whether the assessment helps improve the education level of students or if it is not effective and not fair.

Schools which use tests as evaluation method agree to the fact that taking tests make students know where they academically stand among other fellow classmates, which in the aspect of teachers and parents helps them give smart advices to the students. Examination results compare students with each other that play as motivations to students who strive to do better than others. Moreover, taking exams helps oneself accumulate knowledge even though many students are not in favor of studying. Therefore, through such method, students will have to push themselves to do better and make improvements while also learning new things in the process. On the other hand, those who are against testing in school policy asserts that taking test makes students obsessed about the test scores, it is not an effective way of learning because of short term memorization, and students further lose interest in studying due to parent's lecture about their reports. Furthermore, it discourages students with poor grades to study and instead easily give up.

I believe testing in school is the most appropriate way for school to evaluate student. Not only it motivates students to try harder and be competitive, but also it has always been a good method to make students study for what they learn in class and absorb at least the basic important knowledge.  There is a saying that "If you can't avoid it, enjoy it." I think this is a perfect quote for students who are getting stressed over school grades and studying. Once, they know how to enjoy learning and preparing for tests, it wouldn't just be an imperative process. Taking examinations can become a self check to how much oneself is progressing throughout the school life.

  1. From Noh Young Sun to Kim Kyung Un

1.What I like about this writing is the hook of the essay. Instead of asking a question or using a famous quote, you chose to vividly describe the scene of students taking tests which is , I think, quite ingenious^^

2.The point you are trying to make in this essay is that tests are quite an effective tool to measure students’ performance and to motivate them to study in earnest.

3.“The amplified sound of thin papers being flipped and turned, anxious scribble noises made by pencils filling in bubble columns, heart beating faster and faster as time runs out precisely remind me of myself of how I am whenever I take exams.” I really like this part, because ,like I said, it is a pretty darn good and vivid description of the scene inside the classroom during the exam. I really like the choice of words in this sentence.

    4.In the same sentence in number3, I don’t understand this part’ “ ~how I am whenever I take exams”

5.I think you should include a refutation to the counterargument that you wrote in the last part of the body paragraph.

  2. To Kim Kyungun From Seonyoung Blair Hwang

1.What I like about this writing is your vivid description of the first paragraph. You tried to show how nervous it is in the class.

    2. The point you are trying to make in this essay is that taking tests would be a effective and useful method to evaluate students' accomplishments.

    3. "There is a saying that "If you can't avoid it, enjoy it."" was pretty impressive to me. I noticed that the quote is quite similar to what I like the most;Carpe Diem which means seize the day. Whenever I have to undergo some adversities like taking exams, I remind this quote.

    4. "...which sometimes do have a tremendous impact on their life deciding on the importance of the test,..." is not clear to me. I guessed what you were trying to say like but still it doesn't help.

    5. When it comes to the relationship between counter-argument and refutation, you should show the connection between them. I think there is not enough clear statement between your counter-argument and refutation.

Surprisingly, when most schools use standardized tests, there are schools such as private schools which say no to tests, and are not convinced that tests in school is the most effective tool for evaluating the students according to the findings on Pennsylvania education survey.. Different opinions on having standardized test in schools still exist, mostly between contrasting ideas, whether the assessment helps improve the education level of students or if it is not effective and not fair.
